It has a science and research community that has pioneered globally significant and successful new ideas, techniques and technologies. The first heart transplant worldwide was in South Africa, so they have a great medical expertise.

Also South Africa is rich in coals, and had one of the largest coal-fired power stations in the world. The Government department of Science and Technology (DST) are responsible for this sector.
